Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro - Quick Overview
The IsatPhone Pro is a small, very low cost, lightweight satellite phone operating on the Inmarsat satellite network, with Prepaid airtime topup and Postpaid airtime contracts. The IsatPhone Pro has a standby battery time of 100 hours, and 8 hours talk-time on one charge with Data capabilities of up-to 20kbps. IsatPhone Pro owners do not pay for incoming calls wherever they are in the world and text messages from the manufacturers website are free.
Inmarsat IsatPhone Pro - Satellite Coverage
The Inmarsat satellite coverage extends to 98% of the globe, excluding just the north and south poles, and handles extensive traffic not only for the IsatPhone Pro, but for BGAN, aircraft, Land and Marine, making it one of the largest and most widely used systems. Inmarsat has several backup geostationary satellites and will be extending this to the Ka Band in the future, allowing broadband speeds over satellite.

New IsatPhone Pro’s are supplied with an activated sim and airtime which lasts for two years, which can be extended indefinitely by simply adding more airtime, there are no ongoing payments with prepaid airtime. IsatPhone Pro Call rates are based on units which fluctuate wildly between service providers, however, we maintain ours fixed at the lowest rate around per minute at just 59p to call any land-line, 71p to call any mobile, and 29p to send a text, making it far cheaper to use than roaming on a normal mobile, in addition to not being charged for inbound calls, free inbound text messages, and no local authority monitoring.

The Iridium 9575 Extreme is the newest satellite phone currently available. The 9575 Extreme is lighter and smaller then its predecessor the 9555. Not only does the 9575 Extreme offer Iridium’s global coverage for voice, data and SMS but it is the first satellite phone to offer the fully integrated services of customizable GPS, online tracking and emergency SOS with notification services.
Other features of the handset include a IP65 rating which means the 9575 Extreme is dust proof, shock resistant and jet water resistant. It is also the first handset to offer military-grade 810F durability. Another first for satellite phones is the introduction of Iridium AxcessPoint.
Iridium 9555 nad Iridium 9575 Satellite Phones - Satellite Coverage
Unlike Inmarsat and the IsatPhone Pro, the Iridium satellite network covers the entire planet by means of 66 low earth orbiting satellites, only 781km or so above the earth, as opposed to Inmarsat’s three satellites at 33000 km, and as the satellite network is in a low orbit, they travel at 17000 mph and hand calls over to others so you don’t lose connection, but it does come at a price, they occasionally bump into each other as in 2008.
Iridium 9555 nad Iridium 9575 Satellite Phones – Sim and Charges
As with the IsatPhone Pro, new phones are supplied with an activated sim and airtime which lasts a length of time dependant on the minutes purchased. As an example, 75 minues has only one months life, but 500 minutes has 12 months time, and to extend this without buying airtime you need to purchase a re-validation voucher (about £35) each month. Should your card run out of time, you will lose the minutes still left and the operator will deactivate the sim card, if you need you old number back, be prepared to pay a very high price for reactivation (around £250), or, order a new sim card.

Thuraya XT Satellite Phone - Satellite Coverage
The Thuraya satellite service is regional, it only covers a limited area, mainly excluding the pacific, USA and South America, as well as having limited coverage of other continents. It consists of three satellites with continental beams, and the handsets require a higher gain antenna, making them slightly directional, which normallyentails waving the phone around to get the best signal. Some areas have limited coverage, shown in light blue on the map and may or may not get you a signal.
Thuraya XT Satellite Phone – Sim and Charges
Thuraya sim cards are chargeable when activated, this charge may be included in your package, and on the anniversary of the sim activation, an annual charge of 39 units is automatically deducted. Sims come in two flavours, one being normal, ie, any where within the Thuraya network, and one called the ECO sim, giving substantial discounts for certain countries only, you can check what these are on our support portal.
